A human fetus in its amniotic sea absorbs more than nutrients and oxygen from its mother. The placenta effectively isolates the developing human agains most external bacteria and viruses with great efficiency.

However most maternal hormones - adrenalin, for example - readily cross the placenta, as do many drugs. The mother transmits to the fetus some of the internal effects that result from her external environment. Sound, for instance, from the outside world and from the mother’s interior are readily audible within the uterus. The mother’s nutritional and emotional state directly affect the fetus.

To some degree, who we become is influenced, perhaps even determined, long before we are born.
