The heart, one of the earliest organs to develop and function, begins to beat around day 21 of gestation. For the entire duration of human life it squeezes blood through the body every 0.8 seconds (on average). Under natural circumstances, the cessation of rhythmic cardiac contraction, coincides with the cessation of life.

But for virtually all human cultures throughout history the heart is more than a muscular pump. It carries a metaphorical significance. In western culture it has been considered the seat of emotion, in other cultures it is the site of courage, and in still others, it is the source from which our life force derives.
