The structure of the human eye is substantially the same as that of most mammals. Yet even when reduced to the prosaic level of anatomical dissection, its significance for humans extends beyond mere engineering wizardry. We ascribe to it functions beyond its physiology. We use our eyes to gaze out at others, and others use our eyes as a keyhole through which to gaze inwards.
